Nitrogen A compound in which nitrogen has a relatively lower valence as contrasted with nitric compounds. Not known in the free state, but forming a well known series of salts, namely the nitrites, nitrous oxide has been used for medical purposes since the late 18th century. A colorless, sweet-tasting gas, nitrous oxide is used as a mild anesthetic in dentistry and surgery.
